Since 1960, Las Vegas has had 21 Flash Floods causing $11 million in damages. In 1985, voters approved the formation of the Clark County Regional Flood Control District. The District implemented a 50 year plan costing $2.2 billion to protect the basin from flooding. The Master Plan is 75% complete ($1.7 billion) The plan did not account for events such as significant changes in the weather changes, otherwise known as climate change. As a result, The Master Plan continues with 3 more projects for 2018 costing another $10.5 million and another 28 detention basins to be built.
Perhaps Las Vegas should now be known as “Basin City”.

I’m a marine biologist and I find this fascinating- real life evidence that climate change is affecting us monetarily. I work for the State of California in Sacramento and I mange their landscaping. I am going to forward this video to my department head because this is something to consider when planning. If we don’t plan for climate change, then we will waste millions of dollars like Clark Countty in Nevada.
