Full capacity of Lake Mead is about 1224 feet. It’s currently down to 1083 feet. At 1075 feet, Lake Mead declares a shortage. At 895 feet, Las Vegans get their water cut off.
A recent study in January 2021 shows Lake Mead water levels dangerously low at 1083 feet. However, if Lake Mead's elevation goes below 1,075 feet by August 2021, then a "shortage condition" will be declared in the Lower Basin. Under a shortage condition, water allotments to Arizona, Nevada by 13,000 acre-feet, and Mexico would be reduced. The declaration would apply to the 2022 calendar year.
The trend is a concern than water may be in short supply sooner than previously thought. Conversation efforts have helped. But Las Vegas developer continue to expand as more California seek cheaper land, rent and mortgages.
