I don't know Tony. But I know what it's like being a liberal in Las Vegas: you are ridiculed, shunned and shut out by the local media. But after Tony died, the media jumps on the liberal kindness the Tony showed to his employees, his customers and the poor.
Tony Hsieh was miserable in Las Vegas
In 2011, Las Vegas was bouncing back from the mortgage scams of 2008. By 2012, Zappos had relocated to Las Vegas in hopes to turn downtown into a mini liberal San Francisco or Portland. But instead, city council members Michele Fiori, Lee Stratvos and Mayor Goodman led a charge to start passing anti-people laws to counter Tony's liberal investments. In 2014, the county passed a law that made it illegal to carry a glass container (alcoholic or nonalcoholic). In 2015, the city passed laws that prohibited street entertainers from performing without a permit. In 2017, they passed laws that made it illegal to feed birds. Tourists could face up to 6 months in prison for feeding a pigeon. The final straw came in 2019 was when the city made it illegal to be homeless. Countless protests around the nation would not change the minds of Michele Fiori, Mayor Goodman, Lee Stratvos, Cedric Crear, and Victoria D. Seaman.
There were signs that bad karma was heading Las Vegas' way unless the leaders of Las Vegas changed their ways. Snow storms, earthquakes, flooding, fires, a grasshopper invasion and even pigeons with hats showed up. But instead of heeding the warning signs, Steve Sisolak and Sheldon Adelson (owner of the Venetian and the Las Vegas Review-Journal) moved forward with bringing an NFL team to Sin City. What? Since when did cats start mating with dogs?
Very few Las Vegas locals wanted an NFL team. Las Vegas is based on gambling and tourism. Sports fans come to Vegas from all over the world to place sports bets and watch the games. But instead, fans will be holding losing tickets that say the Las Vegas Raiders took your money. How will that sit with gamblers? They might even start to think the games connected to the book makers.
Botton line: Vegas lost its impartial status as a place to play football in exchange for owning a NFL football team.
Meanwhile, the World is on Fire
A social media feed with Las Vegas bloggers will make you feel schizophrenic. Local media and bloggers talk nothing about the truth of Vegas. The only tell their readers what their readers want to hear. The "journalists" in Las Vegas are so lonely that they will write anything as long as it's popular. But they won't write anything that's truthful if its negative against the product. The product is Las Vegas. The Las Vegas local media is nothing more than sponsored paid for infotainment.
Greedy People Shocked That a Billionaire Would be Unhappy
Tony left Las Vegas in 2020. He went to Park City Utah searching for answers. He must have found something. But greedy people around the world are so shocked. They say it's sad he died. Why? This is not the fun party place that we were promised in the 1900s. Since 9/11, we have had censorship in our movies, music and TV. There are no "parties" anymore. They traded parties for social networking. Bottom line to people who cannot comprehend why a billionaire would commit suicide is: money cannot buy you love.
