Las Vegas was established in 1905, the same year my Father's hardware store was built.
It's interesting thothink that this building was being constructed at the same time settlers were establishing the town of Las Vegas. Las Vegas was established before Clark County. After Clark Country was established, Las Vegas was incorporated in 1911.
The first people to inhabit the Las Vegas basin were mormon missionaries from Utah in the 1800s. Las Vegas Springs Preserved was used as a clandestine fort in case of war with Mexico. But the 1900s, pipes brought water into town from the the wells. This allowed the population to grow. Las Vegas became a watering stop on the way from Albuquerque to Los Angeles. Nevada soon outlawed gambling in 1910 following a strict nationwide crackdown. But Las Vegas had other industries other than gambling to generate revenue.
Las Vegas relies on people passing though to survive
Las Vegas makes their money from people passing through. The locals do not pay any income tax. Instead, they have an esrtemly high sales tax. More recently, the locals wanted a football team only if they didn't have to pay for it themselves. They passed a hotel tax that will tax only the tourists passing through to pay for their new Allegiant Stadium.
Today, local bloggers are constantly pumping up Las Vegas even in the face of growing pandemic numbers, Las Vegas cannot afford to have lose tourism because their entire infrastructure is built on taxes paid by outside tourists passing through. Even when it's important to get vaccinated, the only way they could get local Las Vegans to get vaccinated is if they offered $100 gift cards and lottery tickets.
